VA Hospital Visit on December 14, 2009
On Monday December 14, 2009 a 3-person delegation of volunteers
from Lodge #2444 visited the Long Beach Veterans Hospital along
with the 9 other Orange Coast District Lodges. During the visit the
group conducted bingo games for the vets. Coffee, cookies and punch
were served to the vets. Our lodge donated 24 bed-size Afghans and
6 wheel chair-size Afghans which were made by the knitting group
volunteers and coordinated by Sandy Bergen. The volunteers from
our Lodge who participated in the visit were: Paul O'Brien, Sandie
McClure and Leo Hazell. Two large boxes of cookies were served to
the Bingo players. Both boxes were prepared by the Lodge baker,
Ed Mackey. Gwen Williams donated several bags of gifts, a box of
baseball caps, and four lumber jack shirts. The Boelts family donated
a large Tupperware box packed with sweat shirts and t-shirts.
Additionally, they donated a large plastic bag full of green elk sweat
shirts. While other volunteers were assisting at Bingo, our delegation
of volunteers brought Afghans to the Spinal Injury Unit in
Building 150. We had one pick-up truck almost filled with gifts. The
estimated value of the articles, time & mileage donated by our lodges
was $2,816.00 The next visit to the hospital has not been released

ELKS VISIT VETERANS AT LONG BEACH VETERANS HOSPITAL

On Monday, November 2, 2009 a 7-person delegation of volunteers from Lodge 2444 visited the Long Beach Veterans Hospital along with Lodge 794 from Santa Ana. During the visit the
group conducted bingo games for the vets. Coffee cookies and punch was served to the vets. Our lodge donated 40 Afghans and four embroidered blankets which were made by the knitting group
volunteers and coordinated by Sandy Bergen. Two boxes of cookies were served to the Bingo players. One box was donated by the Lodge and the other was home made by Pam Mackey. The volunteers from our Lodge who participated in the visit were: Ron Hopwood, Steve Zannella, Paul O'Brien, Kathy Griffin, Andy Dumont, Elizabeth and Leo Hazell. While our volunteers were assisting at Bingo we sent a delegation
of volunteers to bring Afghans to the Spinal Injury Unit in Building 150. During the visit Elk Pins were distributed to Veterans recognizing their military service.

VA Hospital Visit
July 20, 2009

ELKS VISIT WITH OUR VETERANS                                   

On Monday, July 20, 2009 a group of 8 volunteers from the Mission Viejo Elks Lodge # 2444 visited the Long Beach Veterans Hospital.
Each lodge contributed money to be awarded to the veterans who were playing Bingo and conducted the games.  Our lodge donated 25 Afghans which were made by the knitting group of volunteers coordinated by Sandra Bergen.100 chocolate chip cookies were made by our members Ron Bauchero and Dave Hare, we also had cookies made by Pam Mackey.We took styrofoam cups for punch.
Toilet articles, books, T-Shirts donated by Bill Bobgartz, and clothing were delivered to the Spinal Cord Injury Ward.

The 8 volunteers from our Lodge who participated in the visit were, Gloria R. LeCouvre, Tom Banning, Ray Mallen, Carla Jo Hannon, Linda Rouche, Pam Mackey, Mark Hopkins and Mary Hopkins.

VA Hospital Visit
May 11, 2009

On Monday May 11, 2009 a 5 person delegation of volunteers from Lodge 2444 visited the Long Beach Veterans Hospital along with Lodge 794 from Santa Ana.  During the visit the group conducted bingo games for the vets. Coffee cookies and punch was served to the vets.
Our lodge donated 43 Afghans which were made by the knitting group volunteers and coordinated by Sandy Bergen.
The volunteers from our Lodge who participated in the visit. Were; Andy Dumont,  Linda Roche,  Tom Banning, Ray Mallen and  Leo Hazell.
Two bags of  food containing cookies and other snacks were served to the Bingo players.

While our volunteers were assisting at Bingo we sent a delegation of volunteers to bring Afghans to the Spinal Injury Unit in Building 150.  That delegation consisted of;  Ray Mallen, Tom Banning and Linda Roche. Later in the evening  the first delegation was joined by Andy Dumont and Leo Hazell  and they  distributed Afghans to patients in the surgical wards in the  main hospital building, 126,
.
We had one pick-up truck filled with gifts
The gifts consisted of:
6 bags of clothing  estimated value =  $30 /bag x 6 =    $180.00
2 bags of food snacks               $10 X 2 =                           20.00
2 bags of toilet items                $10 X 2 =                           20.00
43 Afghans donated by Sandy Bergen & Knitting group (43Afghans) x $100 = $4,300.00

100 Styrofoam coffee cups provided by Lodge  $3.00
$100.00 cash for Bingo prize money donated by Lodge   =    $4623.00       

From portal to portal our Lodge worked from 6:00PM until 10:00PM for four hours x 5 people = 20 volunteer hours for the night. x $19.41 = $388.20 labor value donation.  
The estimated value of the articles donated by our lodges was $ 5,011.20 including mileage and labor donation.    The next visit to the hospital will be July 20, 2009 at 6:60 PM.

VA Hospital Visit
December 23, 2008

On Tuesday December 23, 2008, a four person delegation of volunteers from Lodge 2444, visited the Long Beach Veterans Hospital. The trip was a follow-up visit to bring presents to patients in the fourth floor of the main hospital building 126 who did not receive a present during our last visit. Harvey Boelts of the Bingo Committee, transferred custody of  48 gift bags left over from the Special Kids party to the veterans committee.

The bags contained a variety of items including toilet articles, candy, radio and two shirts. The morning of the delivery the Bongartz family donated an additional 48 shirts for presents for the vets.  When the gift distribution was completed in building 126 the volunteers moved on to the Community Living Center at the hospital to distribute the remaining gifts.
The volunteers from our lodge that participated in the visit were Sharon Scott, Andy Dumont, Elizabeth and Leo Hazell. The group left the Lodge at 4:00 PM and returned at 8:30 PM. for a total of 18 volunteer hours x $19.41 =        $349.38 labor donation to the vets.
Mileage allowance = 70 miles x .51=                         $35.70
Gifts @ $20.00 per bag x 48 bags =                        $960.00
48 shirts @ $10.00 =                                                    $480.00

VA Hospital Visit
December 8, 2008

On Monday December 6, 2008 a 11 person delegation of volunteers from Lodge 2444 visited the Long Beach Veterans Hospital Community Living Center as part of a  District visitation comprised of several lodges. During the visit the group conducted bingo games for the vets. Coffee cookies and punch was served to the vets.
Our lodge donated 40 Afghans which were made by the knitting group volunteers and coordinated by Sandy Bergen.
The volunteers from our Lodge who participated in the visit. Were; Andy Dumont ,Charlie Hart, Elizabeth Hazell, Leo Hazell, Al Hofer. Gloria LeCouvre, Ray Mallen, Pat Martino, Sandie McClure, Sharon Scott and Ann Sievers. Four bags of  Cookies for the event were baked by Pam Mackey
While our volunteers were assisting at Bingo we sent a delegation of volunteers to bring gifts to the Spinal Injury Unit in Building 150.  That delegation consisted of;  Andy Dumont, Elizabeth Hazell,  Leo Hazell, Ray Mallen and Pat Martino.Our people made two trips to that building.  

Later in the evening another delegation consisting of Gloria LeCouvre, Pat Martino, Sandie McClure and Sharon Scott made a visit to the main hospital building, 126, to deliver more gifts to patients and did not return until 9:50 PM.

We had one pick-up truck filled with gifts, and additional gifts in a SUV and pick-up truck.
The gifts consisted of:
4 boxes shirts donated by Bongartz family $400.00
2 boxes gifts donated by Bongartz family $200.00
8 bags Afghans donated by Sandy Bergen & Knitting group (40Afghans) x $100 = $4,000.00
large bag of toilet articles (hotel type) anonymous  $20.00

1 large barrel filled with wrapped Christmas presents prepared by Sharon Scott   $200.00

$50.00 cash for Bingo prize money donated by Lodge  $50.   =    $4923.00       Gifts The estimated value of the articles donated by our lodges was $ 6,360.00    including mileage.  From portal to portal our Lodge worked from 6:00PM until 11:00PM for five hours x 10 people = 55 volunteer hours for the night. X $19.41 = $1,067.55 labor value donation.      The next visit to the hospital will be announced at a later date.

VA Hospital Visit
November 3, 2008

On Monday November 3, 2008 a 5 person delegation of volunteers from Lodge 2444 visited the Long Beach Veterans Hospital Nursing Home as part of a 2 team visitation  with Santa Ana Lodge 794.. During the visit the group conducted bingo games for the vets. Coffee cookies and punch was served to the vets. Reading material consisting of magazines and books were distributed to the vets.  Our lodge donated 6 Afghans which were made by the knitting group volunteers and coordinated by Sandy Bergen.Two business suits were donated by Mike Holohan.  Volunteers Gwen Williams and Sharon Scott delevered three large bags of clothing and reading material.  Among the clothing itemms donated were items fom Stan Katapski's wardrobe donated by Pat  Katapski. Clothing items were also donated by Dave Vergiver . There were five volunteers from our Lodge who participated in the visit., Andrew Dumont, Sharon Scott, Gwen Williams, Elizabeth and Leo Hazell  Cookies for the event were baked by Pam Makey and sugar free cookies were purchased locally by Sharon Scott. .Nancy Allen donated a large bag of toilet articles.
The estimated value of the articles donated by our lodges was $1300.00 including mileage.  Total Volunteer hours were twenty (20)  The next visit to the hospital will be Monday, December 8, 2008
