 California Elks Camper Rally
Mission Statement
Who are the children the California-Hawaii Major Project, Inc. (The Purple Pig) serves?
They are the children who have been lost to "the system," the children who are not considered eligible to receive services from other agencies or programs for their disabilities. It may be because they have no insurance. It may be because they live too far away. Whatever the reason, the Elks are there to help them with services through the Major Project.
The "California Elks Camper Rally" started in 1969 as the "Southern California Elks Camper Rally." The goals of this Rally are for campers and friends to gather together for a weekend of food, fun, games, contests and camaraderie; with the final objective of raising money for the California - Hawaii Elks Association Major Project, i.e. the Purple Pig.
The interest and participation in the Rally has increased tremendously over the years and we arrived at a point where it was believed that the name "Southern California Elks Camper Rally" no longer reflected this progress. In 1998, a name change to the "California Elks Camper Rally" was made to better reflect our growth and the statewide participation we enjoy. At the present time we have participation not only from the Lodges in the State of California but also from beyond its borders.

CALIFORNIA-HAWAII ELKS MAJOR PROJECT, INC
Mission Statement

The California-Hawaii Elks Major Project, Inc., a committee of the California-Hawaii Elks Association, pledges its commitment to addressing the unmet needs of children with disabilities throughout the states of California and Hawaii by developing a program of supporting services to aid these children at no cost to their families and without discrimination.

Mission Viejo Saddleback Valley Lodge 2444, Exaulted Ruler and Run-a-ways Wagon Master, Pat Martino and his wife Barbara present a check for $1500 to the Major Project Rally Treasurer, Martin Hoxworth.  The check was presented September 26, 2010 at the close of the 42nd Annual California Elks Rally.

RUN-A-WAYS'
CAMPERS NEWS
Cold, gusty winds greeted the early
arrivals for the Run-A-Way’s
Thanksgiving November campout at
Mountain Valley RV Resort in Hemet, but
Mother Nature provided gorgeous quiet
sunshine for the 88 campers the rest of
the weekend. Steve and Marian
Zannella hosted a fantastic Friday night
“New Rig” Champagne party where old
and new friendships were shared.
Wagonmaster Pat engineered a brisk
Saturday morning meeting that
included reminders of our Dec. 12
Christmas party, the January campout
at Golden Village Palms in Hemet with
trailboss Sheri Roadway, and a thank
you that brought a resounding applause
of appreciation to trailbosses Frank and
Shirley Gunning. The highlight of the
campout was the culinary delights of
turkey, dressing, potatoes, gravy,
creamed corn, green beans, yams,
salads, cranberries, and an array of
scrumptious pies. The pilgrims never
had it so good. Marian Zannella, Kathy
Nichols, and Frank Gunning were the
happy winners of the 50/50 prizes with
a goodly amount of cash going to the
Handicapped Kid’s charity fund. Tom
Schreck was the reluctant recipient of
the dreaded Space Cadet award for
spewing diesel fumes into the
environment for thirty minutes as he
tried to correctly situate his rig into his
site. Wild West sheriffs Rita Sandberg
and Ken Zittrer filled the room with
laughter as they cleverly concocted an
assortment of “crimes” punishable with
quarter fines. The campout certainly
provided concrete evidence that the
Run-A-Ways, indeed, have much to be
thankful for

July Campout 2010

This month's campground was  only 44.36 miles from our lodge and is a quite escape from urban living. The Guajome  Regional Park is locate on Route 76, just seven miles East of Route 5.

Thursday there was an early arrival of 5 rigs and some occupants headed for the local casinos, fourteen (14) more rigs arrived Friday for a total of (19)

Friday Night Cocktail and  appetizers were served in the clubhouse but by the size and quantity it was more like another pot luck dinner.  Some people stayed around to play the quarter game which was won by Jennae Wessling and Georgina Pickering

Saturday morning meeting chaired by Wagonmaster Pat Martino who just returned from the Elks Convention in Orlando.

Guests introduced included Paul Popadak, Joe & Doann Girtin, Sue Backus, Glen & George Pickford
An auction of donated items was held Saturday afternoon and it raised $335.25 for the Run-a-ways general fund.

The Lapirres' hosted a high school photo identification contest that was won by Sandy McClure who identified 16 out of 23 photos.

The traditional potluck dinner was held in the clubhouse Saturday night. There were two cash drawings. Bob Lepley won $30.00 and Donna Wild won $50.00

Sheriffs for the evening were Bob & Linda Hauxhurst who raised charity money by imposing .25 cent fines for perceived infractions of members.

The Space Cadet Award was won by Jim Wessling for failure to recognize his own trash can.

Trail bosses Lepleys' and their assistants, Lapierres' did a great job planing the campout and organizing activities to keep people entertained.

August campout will be hosted by the Coopers and assisted by Len & Sue Hersh at the Chula Vista Elks. The September campout  will be at the La Pacifica RV Resort and hosted by Nick Nichols
The Elks Rally will be held in Hemet September 24, 25, and 26. This year the games will be conducted indoors to avoid the heat we experienced last year. Plans are underway for the Annual Western Night held by the Run-a ways, and this year it will be held in August.

CAMPERS NEWS
June 2010WS

The June campout was held at the beautiful Chula Vista Marina in San Diego
County. 24 RV’s filled with members & guests enjoyed sunny skies and just a
slightly cool breeze coming off the water. First-time Trailbosses Fred and JoAnn
Emmerich were ably assisted by Bob and Linda Hauxhurst .

Friday evening the group gathered for cocktails and “Heavy hors d’oeuvres” (as
JoAnn described them). And as usual, they were delicious and plentiful. At the
Saturday 10:00AM meeting, Wagonmaster Pat Martino presented Gene Yamauchi
with a monogrammed jacket as a token of the Club’s appreciation of her years of
service as Club Treasurer. A vote was taken to attend the Elks Rally in
September. Pat also reminded the group of their obligation to host one Campout at
least every 3 years.

A departure from the usual Saturday night Pot Luck dinner was decided on in favor of
an afternoon cocktail party. This time with “Light hors d’oeuvres.” This was done to
allow the campers to attend the fun Street Dance party put on by the Park. There’s
no shortage of parties with this group and they’re some pretty good dancers too!
Susan and Shelly Zeiler did a duel Sheriff’s routine and did a good job of building up
our Purple Pig Fund. The 50/50’s were won by Roger Probst and Babe Giuliano and
Frank Gunning won the Space Cadet for his whining about not getting his lunch on
time, Jeeze Frank!

The July Campout will be held at Guajome County Park July 9th and 10th with the
Lepley’s as Trailbosses

RUN-A-WAYS'
CAMPERS NEWS
May 2010
The May campout comprised 20 rigs and
was held at Campland on The Bay, in San
Diego. The trail bosses for the event were
Howard & Deb Dyson and assisted by Shari
& Dave Roadway. Although our sites were
only 100 yards from the beach the weather
was overcast, cool which did not encourage
swimming. Some of the campers arrived
Thursday; a day early. The campground has
a myriad of amenities geared for family
entertainment. A cocktail party with hors
d’oeuvres was held Friday night in between
the rigs of our hosts the Dysons and
Roadways. The Saturday morning meeting
was conducted by Nick Nichols who was
filling in for Pat Martino, Wagonmaster. The
traditional Saturday night pot luck dinner
was conducted in a large open air tent
provided by Campland. Dinner was followed
with a large assortment of desserts that
filled a large table. Pat & Barbara Martino
were guests for the dinner and briefed the
gathering on Convention events. There was
a double drawing for cash winners. Forty
five dollars was won by Jim Lapiere and
thirty five dollars was won by Babe Giuliano.
The Space Cadet award was passed on to
John Morrow who demonstrated a lack of
safety awareness in the towing of his VW
without the two required safety pins.
Sheriffs, Marge Schreck and Frank Gunning
raised a few dollars for charity with a funfilled
perception of Run-A-Ways wrong
doings. Sunday morning most of the
campers returned home while the
Roadways remained for one more California
day before heading to Colorado. Everyone
at the campout had a great time and hatsoff
to the trail bosses and their assistants
for a well organized program that all
enjoyed, including a boat ride in the bay. The
gathering made cash donations to support
the new Elk statue at the lodge. The next
Run-A-Ways campout will be June 11–12
at Chula Vista, hosted by the JoAnn & Fred
Emmerich, assisted by the Hauxhurst’s. The
July 9-11 Campout will be hosted by the
Lepley’s, San Diego County, Guajome Park.

Run-A-Ways’ Report
April Campout

Newport Dunes RV Waterfront Resort welcomed a wonderful turnout of 37 Run-AWays
rigs for its April Camp Out. Trail Bosses Joe and Babe and assistants Shelly
and Sue planned a unique and tasty Friday night cocktail party. On Friday afternoon,
Babe played Rachel Ray, and taught the gals how to make her zesty Italian sausage bread.
These were then served along with hors d'oeuvres, sangria, and a keg! Games and a
very competitive Poker Tournament completed the fun. Wagonmaster and new ER
Pat presided over the Saturday morning club meeting with decision regarding our attendance
at this year’s Rally still pending. Many thanks to guests Richard and Stella
Oliva, who donated $100 to the Purple Pig and to new member Jeanne Frankenreiter,
who displayed her poker talents the night before and her generosity by donating $50.
Lovely Babe, the birthday girl, celebrated with her family and Run-A-Ways friends,
by serving deliciously rare steaks, plump and juicy sausages, and tender pork roast
to approximately 100 campers and guests on Saturday night. The only complaint was
that by the time you reached her goodies, your plate was filled with the succulent
shrimp, amazing vegetable dishes, salads of all kinds, and tempting breads! Yes, devilish
desserts too! Somehow the female sheriff got lost but Shelly nailed all of Babe's
family but good and male sheriff Frank kept everyone in stitches as he lightened their
wallets with fines. Lucky Nick Nichols won the $100 drawing and showed where his
heart is by promptly donating half his winnings back to the Purple Pig for the kids.
My goodness, these Run-A-Ways are generous and fun loving group!

Beautiful snow capped mountains, cold  nights and warm days, peacocks, turkeys,
yellow breasted finches, and a fishing pond were just a few of the amenities enjoyed
by the Run-A-Ways at their February camp out in the rolling hills of Tucalota Springs
Campground. Some of Thursdays early arrivals found a casino for fun while others
just enjoyed dinner at the campground. Fred and JoAnn Emmerich hosted a marvelous
"New Rig" party, complete with a champagne toast! Acting Wagonmaster
Andy Costello engineered the Saturday morning business meeting where nominations
for new officers were made. Andy also coerced several commitments for 2011 trail
bosses. Saturday night dinner featured a wonderful assortment of delicious entrees,
salads, and desserts, including bithday cake for Nick Nichols, who also won the 50/50
drawing and promptly donated half back to the "kids" Major Project charity. Sheriffs
Rosemary Lionetti and Dave Cooper then extracted a goodly number of quarters
from those naughty campers who deserved it. Thanks to Trailbosses Elizabeth
and Leo Hazell and their able assistants, Carol and Jim Lapierre for planning such
a fun campout. Janice and Martin Carbone are Trailbosses for the March 13-14
campout at Sands RV Resort. Hurry and sign up! It promises to be a good one!
